The radio in a smart lock decides what it can do, how long the batteries last, and what else it needs to work. There are three main families and the right one depends on how you will use the lock, not on which one is newest.
Bluetooth locks talk to your phone when the phone is within a few dozen feet of the door. They are simple, they need no hub or bridge, and they use very little battery. What they cannot do is tell you the door is locked while you are on the water or let you unlock for a delivery from the office. For a household that wants keyless entry and the ability to hand out codes, and does not need remote control, Bluetooth is often the honest recommendation.
Wi-Fi locks connect directly to your home router, so you can lock, unlock, check status and change codes from anywhere with a signal. The cost is battery life; a Wi-Fi radio wakes and transmits far more than a Bluetooth one, and lock batteries that last a year on Bluetooth can last a few months on Wi-Fi, less in the heat. Wi-Fi locks also depend on router placement. A front door at the far end of a long ranch house near Meigs Drive with the router in a back bedroom may have a weak signal, and a lock with a weak signal retries constantly and drains faster still.
These locks pair with a home automation hub rather than with your phone directly. They use very little power, they integrate with lights, cameras, thermostats and alarm panels, and they keep working on the local network when the internet is down. The trade-off is the hub: you need one, and the lock is only as reliable as the hub and its placement. For a house that already has a hub or an alarm system with smart home support, a Z-Wave lock is usually the cleanest choice. For a house without one, it is an extra box to buy and understand.
Many Bluetooth locks offer a plug-in bridge that adds remote access over Wi-Fi without putting the Wi-Fi radio in the lock itself. This preserves battery life while giving you remote control, at the cost of one more device plugged into a wall near the door. For a lot of Shalimar homes this is the best of both, and we will say so when it fits.
Not everyone wants an app. A standalone electronic keypad deadbolt with no radio gives you code entry, several user codes, and a mechanical key backup, with no phone, hub or account. Batteries last a long time because nothing is transmitting. Codes are changed at the keypad. For an older relative, a rental unit, a workshop or a family that simply wants to stop carrying keys, a plain keypad is often the right answer and we install a lot of them.
The feature that sells smart locks to Shalimar households is not remote unlocking. It is codes with rules. The cleaner gets a code that works Tuesday mornings and nowhere else in the week. The pet sitter gets a code that works for the six days you are away and expires when you land. The contractor gets a one-time code for the day of the estimate. The teenagers get a permanent code and you get a notification when it is used after curfew. The boat captain gets a code for the dock-side door and not the house.
Setting this up is where most people give up and hand out one code to everybody, which defeats the purpose. During installation we sit down with you and build the code list: who, which door, which days and hours, and when it expires. We show you how to add and revoke a code from the app or the keypad. We also set up the notification rules so you hear about the events that matter and not about every lock and unlock all day.
Owners of short-term rentals on Poquito Bayou and Garnier Bayou usually want a code per booking that activates at check-in and dies at checkout, plus a cleaner code between stays, plus an owner master code. Many locks handle this natively, and some rental platforms can push codes automatically. We configure the lock for the workflow you actually use and we make sure the cleaner code cannot be used during a guest stay.
The failure calls we get are remarkably consistent, and most of them are not electronic failures at all.
A smart lock's motor has to throw and retract the bolt. If the door has swollen in the wet season, if the house has settled and the strike is a hair out of alignment, or if the bolt was never centered in the strike to begin with, the motor strains on every cycle. That drains the batteries in weeks instead of months and triggers jam alerts. Before we install any smart lock we check that the bolt throws freely by hand with no pressure on the door. If it does not, we fix the door or the strike first. A smart lock on a bad door is a warranty claim waiting to happen.
Humid air gets into battery compartments, condenses on the contacts, and corrodes them. A lock that starts reporting low battery with fresh batteries, or that reboots randomly, often has green or white crust on the contacts. We clean and treat contacts, and on doors that face the water we favor locks with gasketed compartments and we add a light dielectric protectant to the contacts at installation.
Touchscreen keypads on the bayou side of town collect a salt film that makes them unresponsive or causes phantom presses. Physical-button keypads tolerate this better. Either way, a wipe with a damp cloth every few weeks is part of owning one here, and we will tell you which models have keypads sealed well enough for a door that gets spray.
A lock that cannot reach the router keeps trying, and trying is what eats batteries. When the front door is far from the router, we recommend a Bluetooth lock with a bridge placed near the door, or a mesh node, rather than a Wi-Fi lock alone.
Occasionally the lock is fine and the app is not. Firmware updates that fail halfway, accounts that lose the lock after a phone change, and hubs that drop a device after a power outage all present as a broken lock. We know the recovery procedures for the common brands and we will walk through them before anyone talks about replacement.
Every smart lock we install keeps a mechanical key cylinder unless the homeowner insists otherwise, and we will explain why before honoring that request. Batteries die at the worst time. Phones end up in the bayou. Wi-Fi goes down in a storm along with the power. A lock with a mechanical override and a spare key in a sensible place means none of those is an emergency.
The cylinder in many smart locks is an afterthought, a low-grade cylinder that is easily picked or bumped. If the lock is on a main entry we can often replace that cylinder with a better one, or key it to match your other doors so the backup key is the key you already carry. Locks with no mechanical override at all rely on external battery terminals or a hidden port; we will show you exactly how those work at installation so you are not learning it at midnight.
There are two ways to put a smart lock on a door and the right one depends on the deadbolt already there.
A retrofit smart lock replaces only the interior thumb turn assembly. The exterior of the lock and the existing keys stay exactly as they are. This is the right choice when the existing deadbolt is a good one, when the homeowner wants to keep the exterior look, or on a rental where the landlord controls the key and the tenant wants keyless convenience. It is also the fastest installation. The limitation is that most retrofits do not include a keypad, so entry from outside is by phone or by the original key.
A full-replacement smart lock swaps the entire deadbolt, giving you a keypad or touchscreen outside and the electronics inside. This is the choice when the existing deadbolt is worn or low-grade, when you want codes entered at the door, or when the finish needs to match new hardware. It takes longer and it means new keys for the mechanical backup, which we can key to match your other doors.
Either way we confirm the door thickness, backset and bore before choosing hardware, because a smart lock that needs a slightly larger bore is a common surprise on older Shalimar doors.
Bring us the lock that stopped working.
